German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei has placed an order for two 5,100 teu widebeam containerships at a shipyard in the Far East, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

The vessels will comply with IMO Tier III standards and be fitted with a range of fuel-saving devices, the company said without disclosing the builder or pricing details.

The Drochtersen-based owner, part of the United Shipping Companies (USC) Group, has been steadily growing its fleet of modern container vessels. The company currently controls more than 30 ships, with several additional newbuilds on order.

These include 1,300 teu methanol dual-fuel vessels under construction at China’s Wenchong Shipyard, due in 2026, and four more 1,900 teu ships from the same yard, scheduled for delivery throughout 2027.

The latest order marks a step up in scale for Elbdeich as these will be the largest newbuildings in the company’s fleet to date.
