Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) inaugurates state-of-the-art cranes to strengthen Tarapacá’s logistics development

Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI), a port owned by Hanseatic Global Terminals, inaugurated two mobile cranes and eight container carriers, marking a milestone in the modernization of its operations and part of an investment plan to renew its fleet, totaling more than US$15 million.

“This investment reinforces the company’s commitment to the economic and logistical development of the Tarapacá Region. We are preparing for the future: with more cargo capacity for increasingly demanding markets, always guided by the pillars of efficiency, quality, and safety,” said ITI General Manager Rodrigo Pommiez at the ceremony attended by authorities, customers, and workers.

For her part, Magdalena Balcells, chair of the board of Empresa Portuaria Iquique, praised the investment and stressed that “the addition of this equipment is a clear sign of the concessionaire’s commitment to the port’s development in the region. We view this type of action with optimism because it strengthens our capabilities, just as we are about to begin designing the tender for the new port concession in 2030.”

Meanwhile, the mayor of Iquique, Mauricio Soria, emphasized the importance of integrating this new equipment to enhance the port’s competitiveness and the bi-oceanic corridor’s viability. “Strengthening the terminal’s operational capabilities undoubtedly creates more opportunities for Iquique and its port in other markets.”

Technical details

The mobile cranes incorporated into ITI are a Liebherr LHM 600, with a lifting capacity of 154 tons and a reach that allows it to serve ships with up to 20 rows of containers. The second piece of equipment is the Gottwald ESP.10 mobile harbor crane—the largest in Konecranes’ portfolio—for operating containers on Super-Post Panamax (SPP) ships. It stands out for its ability to handle containers on ships with stacks up to nine containers high and 22 wide.

The company also recently added eight reach stacker cranes, renewing its fleet to ensure more agile and safer operations. With these investments, ITI has solidified its position as a benchmark for excellence, efficiency, and commitment in the port industry and as a driver of development for northern Chile.
