The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India’s maritime administration under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has completed 76 years of service to the nation’s shipping sector and seafaring community.

The Directorate was set up in 1949 and since then has played a key role in shaping maritime policy, regulating shipping operations, protecting the welfare of seafarers, and improving safety and environmental standards.

Over the years, it has helped India emerge as one of the world’s leading suppliers of trained seafarers while supporting the modernisation of shipping and port operations.

As part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Directorate published a special four-page supplement on September 1 in The Economic Times across 18 cities and in the Times of India (Mumbai edition).

During the anniversary, senior officers highlighted that the Directorate is working to match Indian regulations with global maritime conventions, speed up digitalisation of regulatory systems, and strengthen India’s representation in international shipping forums. They noted that since nearly 95% of India’s trade by volume is carried by sea, the Directorate remains central to the country’s trade network.

Another milestone was achieved when Nautical Grade Examinations began at the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Visakhapatnam. According to officials, this step will help seafarers from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, who until now had to travel to Kolkata, Chennai, or Mumbai to appear for the tests.

Senior officers confirmed that the Directorate remains committed to building a strong, safe, and sustainable maritime sector. They linked this vision with the government’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal 2047 roadmap.
