Seafarers play a vital role in keeping world trade flowing, yet they continue to work in uncertain and dangerous conditions, and conflicts around the world are compromising seafarers’ safety, with many experiencing stress and poorer mental health.

This year, on the Day of the Seafarer, Stella Maris has teamed up with NorthStandard, one of the world’s leading marine insurers, to ensure that seafarers are not forgotten and remain supported on this very special day for the shipping industry.

NorthStandard has kindly agreed to cover Stella Maris’ operational costs on the Day of the Seafarer, and its representatives will accompany Stella Maris chaplains on ship visits at some of the key ports where the insurer has office locations including Tilbury and Newcastle in the UK, Incheon in South Korea, and Melbourne, Australia.

“We are very grateful for the sponsorship of NorthStandard which will ensure that our chaplains and volunteer ship visitors are able to continue to provide friendship and support that help safeguard seafarers’ physical and mental health, wellbeing and safety amid all conflict and uncertainty taking place currently,” said Tim Hill, Stella Maris UK CEO.

“Stella Maris provides vital practical and pastoral care to seafarers far from their families and it is an honour to offer our support by covering its operational costs on the Day of the Seafarer,” said Kate Kwiatkowska, Head of Sustainability, NorthStandard. “Our upcoming ship visits will deepen our understanding of, and enhance our response to the challenges faced by the professionals who keep the global economy running.”
