11 personnel were injured and taken to the hospital after a smoke-related incident on a U.S Navy ship, which was undergoing maintenance and repairs at General Dynamics NASSCO’s shipyard in San Diego, California, on September 20, 2025.

The dock landing ship USS Harper Ferry was in the facility when a fan near the gym on its 3rd deck malfunctioned, leading to smoke buildup onboard.

A spokesperson for NASSCO stated that many personnel onboard inhaled the smoke and were treated and then released from the hospital by the morning of September 21, 2025.

Firefighting teams from several agencies also arrived at the scene and contained the smoke.

Despite the ongoing maintenance work, the U.S Navy had said that Harpers Ferry could be retired from service in 2028.

It was commissioned in 1995 and is the lead ship of her class, and will be replaced by San Antonio-class flight II transport docks.
