Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), has completed the initial sea trials of the Virginia-class attack submarine Massachusetts (SSN 798). This marks an important step in the vessel’s development before delivery to the United States Navy.
The trials, conducted over several days at sea, tested the submarine’s systems and capabilities. These included the first submergence of the vessel and high-speed manoeuvres both on the surface and while submerged.
The process is part of a larger testing programme at Newport News Shipbuilding ahead of the submarine’s formal handover to the U.S. Navy. Kari Wilkinson, President of Newport News Shipbuilding, said that the trial is an important step in ensuring the vessel is ready for operation.

According to reports, Wilkinson highlighted the importance of proving the submarine’s performance through these sea trials and reaffirmed the shipyard’s commitment to supporting the Navy’s requirements.
The Massachusetts is the 25th Virginia-class submarine and the 12th constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding. The vessel was christened in May 2023, these first sea trials are vital to ensure it meets operational standards before entering service.
The Virginia-class programme is a key part of the U.S. Navy’s undersea fleet, designed to offer advanced stealth, firepower and operational flexibility. Completing sea trials represents a critical verification stage before commissioning.
