In a significant maritime operation, the Swedish Coast Guard boarded a bulker from which garbage was seen being thrown into the sea.

The Coast Guard boarded last week a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier off Gothenburg in the Baltic Sea.

Sweden’s minister for civil defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin confirmed the incident in a post on X on Oct. 23, stating: “This afternoon I have received information that Kustbevakningen, in Swedish waters, has boarded a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier off Gothenburg, which was reportedly observed dumping garbage in the Baltic Sea off Fårö.”

The minister didn’t disclose any details about the name of the ship in his statement. The incident occurred in Swedish territorial waters, with the Swedish Coast Guard (Kustbevakningen) conducting active maritime surveillance.

This operation exemplifies Sweden’s commitment to rigorous maritime surveillance in combating environmental crimes, as expressed by civil defence minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

“This is a clear example of how the Coast Guard conducts active maritime surveillance work to combat prosecute environmental crimes,” Bohlin wrote in a post on X, without naming the vessel.
