Samsung Heavy to build Amogy ammonia power systems

US ammonia power specialist Amogy has teamed up with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in a multi-year strategic partnership to manufacture its ammonia-to-power systems in South Korea.

Under the agreement, SHI will set up a dedicated facility to produce and test Amogy’s systems for both maritime and land-based power generation. The partnership will kick off with SHI manufacturing units for a pilot clean power project in the city of Pohang, scheduled for 2026.

The deal builds on an existing relationship between the two companies, following SHI’s investment in Amogy in December 2024. The company’s other investors include Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, SK Innovation, Aramco Ventures, Mitsubishi Corporation, BHP Ventures, and AP Ventures.

In addition to contract manufacturing, the partners will continue developing next-generation ammonia-based power systems for ships and distributed energy applications.

Amogy’s technology converts ammonia into hydrogen on-site through an advanced catalyst system, which then feeds a fuel cell or engine to generate zero-carbon power. Its modular design allows for scalable deployment across industrial and marine sectors.

“Samsung Heavy Industries has world-class manufacturing and production capabilities, and this partnership marks a major step forward for Amogy as we move toward commercial-scale production,” said Seonghoon Woo, Amogy’s CEO. “With SHI’s expertise, we can accelerate decarbonisation across both land and sea.”

Lee Ho-gi, managing director of SHI’s eco-friendly research center, said the collaboration would help expand South Korea’s role in developing an eco-friendly fuel ecosystem.

SHI plans to establish testing and manufacturing standards, build process management systems, and expand its ammonia demonstration facility in Geoje by the end of 2025 to support production.
