A fire broke out aboard the 8,212 teu ONE Henry Hudson while docked at Yusen Container Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles late Friday evening. The incident prompted a major emergency response involving nearly 200 firefighting personnel and sparked a shelter-in-place order for nearby communities. 

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire began below deck around 6:38 p.m., likely from an electrical source, then spread through multiple sublevels. A mid-deck explosion disrupted onboard power, knocking out lights and crane operations. 

Fire teams responded with a mix of land- and sea-based resources—including fireboats spraying water and specialized HazMat units monitoring air quality. Authorities identified hazardous materials in several container bays, heightening the danger. 

All 23 crewmembers have been safely evacuated; there are no immediate reports of injuries.

By Saturday morning, the vessel had been towed out to sea to an anchorage near Angel’s Gate Lighthouse, allowing firefighting and cooling efforts to continue while reducing risk to the port. The Port of LA has since lifted its residential shelter-in-place order, and four of its seven container terminals have resumed operations.
