INS Mahe, built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, is made with over 80% indigenous components, showing India’s growing strength in designing and building warships.

The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mahe, the first vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), during a ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 24 November 2025.
The ceremony was presided over by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, while Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, hosted the event.
The Navy described the commissioning as the arrival of a new generation of shallow-water combatants designed to operate effectively in littoral zones.
The vessel, delivered to the Navy on 23 October, is equipped with torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets.

Officials explained that the ship is designed to detect and engage submarines, conduct coastal patrols, and safeguard key maritime approaches along India’s coastline. They added that INS Mahe combines agility, precision and endurance, supported by firepower, stealth and mobility.
The ship is named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar coast. It features an ‘Urumi’ on its crest, the flexible sword associated with Kalarippayattu, symbolising agility and controlled force.
The Navy stated that the vessel’s motto, “Silent Hunters”, represents the principles of stealth, vigilance and determination required for anti-submarine operations.
