Azane secures grant to build Norwegian ammonia bunkering terminals | Environment news

Norway’s ambition to decarbonise shipping has moved from concept to concrete. Azane Infrastructure AS has secured a grant of NOK 442 million from ENOVA to support the construction of three ammonia bunkering terminals, together with partners, along the Norwegian coast.

The terminals will be strategically located at Florø, Stavanger and Mongstad. The aim is to have all three terminals fully operational by 2029, ensuring timely availability of infrastructure to meet the growing demand for green maritime solutions.

“The terminals will be located at Florø, Stavanger and Mongstad and will play a crucial role in enabling zero-carbon ammonia-fueled operations for vessels engaged in coastal and offshore shipping,” the company said.

The grant supports the construction of three terminals along the Norwegian coast, addressing one of the most critical bottlenecks facing zero carbon shipping today.

While vessel designs and engine technologies are advancing, fuel infrastructure has remained the missing piece. Without it, ammonia has stayed theoretical rather than operational.

Norway has a strong track record as a first mover in adopting alternative fuels, including LNG and other clean energy solutions for shipping.

“This funding from ENOVA is a game-changer for the maritime industry,” said Steinar Kostøl, CEO of Azane Fuel Solutions.

“By creating the infrastructure to make ammonia fuel accessible, we are paving the way for zero-carbon shipping along the Norwegian coast and beyond,” he continues.

Azane Infrastructure AS, established in April 2025 as a subsidiary of Azane Fuel Solutions, is a Norwegian company dedicated to the ownership, operation, and management of infrastructure for supplying ammonia as a fuel.
