China-developed methanol-fueled smart crude carrier delivered

A methanol dual-fuel intelligent very large crude carrier (VLCC), named “NEW EXPLORER,” was delivered in the northeast Chinese port city of Dalian on Monday, marking a milestone in green shipbuilding.

This vessel, developed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company for China Merchants Energy Shipping, is equipped with domestically produced methanol dual-fuel engine and supply system, which greatly reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides and particulate matter.

The VLCC showcases China’s independently developed smart systems, which include an intelligent ship platform and an advanced cargo management system, enhancing both operational safety and efficiency.

The intelligent liquid cargo management system installed on the vessel, which has full independent intellectual property rights, integrates more than 10 systems related to crude oil loading, unloading, and transportation, and possesses core functions such as multi-system collaborative control, intelligent loading and unloading operations, and decision support, its developer said.
