One seafarer killed as Russia strikes ships around Odesa

One seafarer has been killed and another injured after Russian forces carried out drone attacks on civilian vessels operating in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region on Friday.

According to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, the strikes targeted ships operating in or close to Ukraine’s maritime export corridor, a key route sustaining the country’s agricultural exports.

One of the vessels hit was the Wael K, a general cargo ship flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The ship was sailing to the port of Chornomorsk to load a grain cargo when it came under attack. The second vessel, the bulk carrier Ladonna, flagged in the Comoros Islands, was struck near the port of Odesa while carrying a cargo of soybeans.

The attack resulted in the death of a Syrian seafarer, with at least one other crewmember injured. Ukrainian authorities said rescue teams were dispatched immediately, adding that preliminary information suggested there could be additional casualties.
