Baltic Dry Index Extends Slide Into 7th Day

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, fell for a seventh consecutive session on Tuesday, down 0.7% to a new low since January 26 at 1,882 points, amid weaker iron ore cargo demand and seasonal Lunar New Year effects.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, dropped about 2.2% to a fresh two-week low of 2,771 points.

Conversely, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose about 1.3% to 1,670 points; and the supramax index went up 0.8% to 1,123 points.
