AF Offshore and Heerema tasked with removing 39,500-ton North Sea platform

A consortium of AF Offshore Decom, part of AF Gruppen, and Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has secured a contract for the engineering, preparation, removal and disposal (EPRD) of a North Sea platform on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).

The platform’s topsides weigh approximately 27,500 tons and the supporting structure around 12,000 tons, with an option to also include a selection of conductors.

Surveys of the offshore platform will start immediately, followed by detailed engineering and offshore preparatory works to be performed within the next three years.

The platform will be removed in a multi-year removal campaign by HMC’s vessels and transported to AF Environmental Base Vats for onshore dismantling, recycling and disposal within the next five years.

“This contract is a testament to the strength of the consortium and our significant North Sea track record delivering safe and efficient EPRD solutions for large and complex North Sea installations. We look forward to beginning this important work, both offshore and onshore, which is rooted in our core capabilities, with our consortium partner HMC and in close cooperation with our client,” said Lars Myhre Hjelmeset, EVP Offshore at AF Gruppen.

Weeks after winning a deal for the engineering, receipt, dismantling and recycling of the FPF-1 floating production platform in the UK sector of the North Sea with Ithaca Energy, announced in early January, AF Offshore Decom was awarded another decommissioning assignment, described as a “major” contract, with the same operator.
