Daehan Shipbuilding halts Korea plant after foreign worker death

Operations have been suspended on the production line at Daehan Shipbuilding where a foreign worker was killed.

Daehan Shipbuilding disclosed on the 3rd that “work at the In-plant No. 1 factory, where a worker was killed during heavy-load handling, has been halted.”

At the In-plant No. 1 factory in Samho-eup, Yeongam County, South Jeolla, at about 11:40 a.m. on the 28th of last month, a Cambodian worker, A, 35, was crushed to death by a 1-ton ship block. The factory was reportedly moving a ship block with a crane at the time.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) ordered work to stop on the In-plant No. 1 factory line immediately after the fatal accident under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Police also launched an investigation. The Serious Accident Investigation Team of the South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency plans to investigate allegations of occupational negligence resulting in death, including violations of duty of care by factory officials, in connection with A’s death.
