Angola’s first non-associated gas development goes live

Azule Energy, a joint venture between two energy majors, Italy’s Eni and the UK’s BP, has put into operation an offshore project, which is described as the first non-associated gas development in Angola.

The Angolan National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) and Azule Energy have confirmed the start-up of gas delivery from the Quiluma field in the New Gas Consortium (NGC), following the introduction of gas into the onshore gas plant in November 2025, which marked the beginning of production operations.

The NGC consists of Azule Energy (operator, with a 37.4% participating interest), Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC) (31%), Sonangol E&P (19.8%), and TotalEnergies (11.8%). The initial gas export will be 150 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (scf/d) and will ramp up to 330 million scf/d by the end of 2026.

This is a pioneering development that is perceived to place Angola at the forefront of modern, lower‑carbon energy solutions, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the national energy journey. The NGC project is said to represent a fundamental priority for the African country’s energy sector, the ability to harness natural gas as an independent resource.

The new capability is deemed to strengthen the country’s energy mix, support domestic consumption needs, and enable more efficient, cleaner power generation. The project’s infrastructure, connecting shallow water offshore resources to an onshore processing facility, marks one of the most significant achievements ever completed in the Angolan energy sector in terms of local content.

The onshore treatment plant, which holds a capacity of 400 million scf/d of gas and 20,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of condensates, was stick-built in Soyo, province of Zaire, Angola. The Quiluma platform, as the main offshore production hub, is described as the biggest structure ever built in Ambriz, with its 2,500-ton jacket and 2,700-ton topsides.

Azule Energy elaborated: “Delivering such a large-scale development required disciplined execution during a cautious global cycle. The NGC workforce achieved outstanding safety performance, reflecting globally recognized standards in risk management, planning, and operational control.

“Across construction and commissioning, thousands of Angolan professionals, technicians, and contractors contributed to the success of the project, building not just infrastructure, but national capability.”

More than 5,000 Angolan workers were mobilized at the peak of activities amongst different construction yards. Thanks to the start of production, the project generates additional direct and indirect employment throughout the life cycle of the plant, contributing to sustained economic growth.

TotalEnergies explains that the gas produced will be a stable and important source of gas supply for the Angola LNG plant, which is delivering LNG to both the European and Asian markets. At plateau, the project will produce around 330 million cubic feet per day of gas, equivalent to approximately 2 million tonnes of LNG per year.

The start-up of this project comes shortly after the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels and Azule Energy brought online the Ndungu full field in February 2026, with oil flowing from three production wells.
