Hanwha unit joins French floating wind project

Q Energy, a subsidiary of the Korean industrial group Hanwha, has acquired a stake in the Pennavel floating wind farm in France.

The project is being developed off the south coast of Brittany. The other two partners in the project are Elicio France and BayWa France.

The Pennavel team has so far carried out more than 18 months of work on the project. The project was awarded in 2024 under France’s AO5 tender, the country’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind auction. It is planned to have an installed capacity of at least 250MW.

Q Energy also benefits from being a subsidiary of Hanwha, a shipbuilder with experience in specialised offshore wind vessels.

The company has been a long-standing presence in the French market and has been a pioneer in offshore wind power development for more than 20 years.

In 2012, the company was the winner of the Ailes Marines consortium in the first call for tenders for one of the first French offshore wind farms, in the bay of Saint-Brieuc. The 496MW project was commissioned in 2024.

“We chose to join Pennavel for the quality of the project, the solidity of its foundations and its strong territorial roots. It is a mature project, structured and aligned with our vision for the development of offshore wind power in France,” said Ken Ilacqua, offshore director of Q Energy.
