Greek bulker player M/Maritime crosses into boxship sector with Korean newbuilds

Greek owner M/Maritime is branching into container shipping, placing its first feeder boxship order while continuing to build out its dry bulk base.

The company has signed for two 2,800 teu newbuildings at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries expected from early 2028.

The vessels will be built to the yard’s eco-focused CON-GREEN design and meet IMO Tier III standards, with a focus on fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, M/Maritime, adding that high reefer capacity is also part of the specification.

The move signals a shift for the Athens-based owner, which has so far been focused on dry bulk tonnage.

The core business has also been bolstered, with the company lining up three long-term time charters for newbuilding bulkers at Japanese yards, including Oshima Shipbuilding, Onomichi Dockyard and Imabari Shipbuilding.

The charters run between five and ten years and include purchase options at the end of each period, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2030.

Founded in 2016 by John Mytilineos, M/Maritime currently operates a fleet of 18 dry bulk vessels, spanning handysize, ultramax and kamsarmax segments, all built at Japanese yards.
