€100 million EU financing backs Port of Klaipėda’s energy transition path

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved approximately €100 million in financing to support the energy transition, among other things, at the Port of Klaipėda in Lithuania.

The €201 million project targets the modernization and expansion of the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Port of Klaipėda, with a focus on investments in port infrastructure and operations to strengthen maritime transport and logistics, enable offshore renewable energy deployment, and provide logistical support for allied military vessels.

According to EIB, the aim is to develop the port into an innovative hub for port services, the maritime industry, and green energy to improve its efficiency and competitiveness, advance decarbonization and the green transition in the port and the wider region, and reinforce security, resilience, and the EU’s strategic autonomy.

The financing was approved on April 23, the same day it was reported that the installation of shore power supply equipment had been completed at the Port of Klaipėda, followed by the start of testing at the Central Klaipėda Terminal and Klaipėda Container Terminal.

Klaipėda Container Terminal will operate one unit and the Central Klaipėda Terminal will have three, all set to serve ferries operating on international routes and transporting passengers and cargo vehicles. At the same time, up to four vessels will be able to connect to the system.

The project, valued at around €10 million, will receive approximately €8.6 million in EU funding.

Similar systems are planned for other terminals, with design work underway. The second phase of quay electrification is expected to be completed by 2030.

“The Port of Klaipėda’s ambition to become more environmentally friendly is reflected in real actions – shore power equipment has already been installed and is now being tested at two terminals. Quay electrification marks a turning point in port operations, helping to reduce noise from vessels at berth as well as emissions. As we complete the first phase of quay electrification, we are already entering the second phase, where design work is now in progress. We are choosing the path followed by the most advanced ports in the world,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
