German utility RWE has signed two major power purchase agreements (PPAs) to supply renewable electricity from its Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm to Breedon Group and Network Rail.
Breedon Group will receive around 70GWh of renewable electricity per year under a 15‑year PPA with RWE, sourced initially from the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm. From 2033, the Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in Wales will also contribute to the supply.
Renewable power will support the production of aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete, cement, and other core building products, helping Breedon cut scope 2 emissions from electricity use in an energy-intensive, hard-to-abate sector.
“By supplying reliable renewable electricity from our wind portfolio, we are helping to reduce the carbon footprint of Breedon’s operations while supporting their ambition to build a more sustainable construction materials business,” said Olaf Lubenow, head of commodity solutions for the UK, North and South Europe at RWE.
In a separate deal, Network Rail will soon power most of its depots, offices, and stations with renewable energy from the same Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm. Under a five‑year PPA, RWE will supply around 300GWh of renewable electricity per year, covering roughly 65% of Network Rail’s non‑traction electricity demand.
The agreement is expected to cut around 168,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually, equivalent to planting about 6.5m trees.
“Rail is already one of the most sustainable ways to travel, but we recognise there is much more we can do. This agreement with RWE represents a major step towards our ambition to power all our non‑traction electricity from renewable sources by 2030,” stated Paul Marshall, Network Rail’s CFO.
The 576MW Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm is located 13 km off the coast of north Wales and comprises 160 wind turbines. It has been in operation since 2015.
