Against the backdrop of the Middle East crisis, which led to regional energy infrastructure attacks and global supply shocks, Polar LNG (Polar Train LNG), a U.S. Arctic energy infrastructure company, has set its cap on advancing a nearshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project on Alaska’s North Slope to unlock the country’s natural gas resources and strengthen America’s energy security by expanding what is described as a reliable LNG supply to allied markets across the Pacific.

With a planned investment of $8–$9 billion and a capacity of 7 million tons (mtpa) of LNG, Polar LNG intends to combine a nearshore design with modular construction to simplify development and accelerate delivery. The natural gas will be sourced from existing infrastructure at Prudhoe Bay and transported via a short pipeline to a nearshore facility, where a modular gravity-based structure will process and liquefy the gas directly at the source.

Afterward, the LNG will be loaded onto specialized ice-class carriers for year-round export. The use of nearshore design is perceived to reduce land disturbance and simplify development, as modular construction accelerates timelines and lowers overall cost, with the first LNG expected in 2029-2030.   Leveraging existing infrastructure at Prudhoe Bay and minimizing new onshore development will enable Polar LNG to deliver a lower-impact path to market.

At the end of March 2026, the company announced its launch and the appointment of Joel Riddle as President and Chief Executive Officer. The firm claims that this LNG development on Alaska’s North Slope is envisioned to accelerate the delivery of the country’s vast natural gas resources to market while supporting American jobs and reinforcing U.S. energy leadership. According to Riddle, the project has the potential to deliver up to 21 million tons of LNG annually.

Polar LNG, which explains that it uses a proven best-in-class operational model implemented for over two decades in Arctic region LNG projects, highlights that Alaska’s North Slope contains one of the largest untapped hydrocarbon reserves in the world. As a result, the development of these resources is anticipated to fortify America’s long-term energy security and help ensure the U.S. keeps playing a leading role in supplying global energy markets.

Given its location in Alaska, Polar LNG is interpreted to offer one of the shortest LNG shipping routes from North America to key Asian markets, approximately 3,600 miles to Japan compared with more than 10,000 miles from the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The developer believes that this geographic advantage positions Alaska as a critical energy partner for allied economies across the Pacific. Aside from boosting domestic energy capacity, the project supports America’s strategic presence in the Arctic, as an increasingly important geopolitical arena.

Riddle emphasized: “Alaska’s North Slope holds one of the most significant undeveloped natural gas resources in the world. Polar LNG is uniquely positioned to bring this resource online—delivering reliable energy for Alaska and a strategic supply for the United States that strengthens energy security, supports American leadership, creates new jobs, and provides trusted energy to our allies.”

Polar LNG, which is deemed to complement Alaska’s broader natural gas development efforts, including the Alaska LNG pipeline project, will enable year-round navigation and logistics access to Alaska’s North Slope through new investments in Arctic infrastructure, including next-generation icebreaking vessels and significant upgrades to West Dock at Prudhoe Bay.

This is forecast to facilitate the transport of heavy equipment, industrial materials, and critical supplies necessary for large-scale energy development in the region, helping establish critical logistics capabilities that can also support future development projects on the North Slope.

“Alaska’s energy future is not about choosing one project over another. Both initiatives share the same goals: providing energy security for Americans and creating economic opportunity for Alaska. We believe in an abundance mindset when it comes to American energy development,” underlined Riddle.

The company elaborates that the LNG project will deliver tangible, long-term benefits to Alaska by generating sustained state revenue from Prudhoe Bay’s natural gas and property tax revenue for the North Slope Borough, supporting essential services and local infrastructure.

In addition, the development is anticipated to strengthen emergency response in the Beaufort Sea through year-round Arctic operations, provide critical support to remote communities, expand continuous environmental monitoring, and incorporate Alaska Native knowledge to ensure responsible development.

Riddle underscored: “Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen just how fragile the global energy system really is. […] At times like this, countries look for partners they can rely on. The United States can be that partner. We have the resources, the technology, and the relationships. But we also have to be willing to act—and nowhere is that more important than in the Arctic. For a long time, the Arctic felt distant. That’s no longer the case. It’s becoming one of the most strategically important regions in the world.

“Russia is expanding its military and energy presence. China is investing heavily to gain access and influence. Whether we like it or not, the Arctic is becoming a place where global power is tested. And in that kind of environment, presence matters. One of the most effective ways to establish that presence is through energy development.

“When we invest in Arctic energy, we’re not just producing fuel—we’re creating year-round activity, building infrastructure, and putting American capability on the map in a region that’s only going to grow in importance.”
