Splash Wrap: Regulators, raiders and deals in Geneva shape shipping this week

The 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84) closes today. Delegates are advancing on areas of broad agreement while systematically pushing the hardest questions – notably the Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity mechanism and the funding architecture of the Net Zero Framework – toward the closing plenary session this afternoon.

A US administrative law judge ordered Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) to pay a record $45.6m in reparations to the bankruptcy estate of collapsed retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, in a ruling that could reshape how ocean carriers honour service contracts during periods of extreme market disruption.

Somali piracy is back in the spotlight after a number of attacks in recent days, including two vessel hijackings, prompting authorities to raise the threat level for the region and warn commercial shipping to exercise extreme caution.

The third edition of Geneva Dry, the world’s premier commodities shipping conference, proved to be the most successful event to date, full of dealmaking, debate and networking. The dry bulk summit will return on April 27 and 28 next year.
