Hanwha Ocean wins 507.4b won deal for three mega ammonia carriers

Hanwha Ocean said on the 4th that it won an order worth 507.4 billion won in total to build three very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) from a shipowner in Africa.

Hanwha Ocean said it is actively responding to growing demand for ships based on eco-friendly fuels, having won orders for a total of 10 ammonia carriers to date, including this contract.

Hanwha Ocean has been continuing technology development to build zero-carbon ships, including obtaining approval in principle (AIP) for an ammonia carrier in 2022 from Bureau Veritas (BV) and Lloyd’s Register (LR).

Last year, it began developing a 150,000 CBM (㎥) very large ammonia carrier with the Korean Register (KR).

Hanwha Ocean has booked orders so far this year for a total of 18 ships—10 very large crude carriers (VLCC), four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, three VLACs, and one wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV)—worth $3.2 billion.
