The government, local authorities, the Hellenic Coast Guard and refineries are on alert over the intense smell in the southern suburbs of Attica. Disturbance has been caused in municipalities of the Southern Suburbs of Attica due to the smell of gas that existed in the atmosphere and became particularly noticeable, mainly in the areas of the coastal front.
As reports of a strong odor continued to emerge, the Hellenic Coast Guard has been placed on heightened alert. So far, no suspicious maritime incidents, sea pollution, or anomalies have been detected. The Coast Guard has conducted extensive checks with a specific focus on passing gas carriers, though no concerning findings have emerged.
The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued a clarifying statement, noting: “In communication with the Coast Guard Operations Center, in extensive checks it has carried out on passing gas carriers, no relevant incident has been reported.”
The government is monitoring the issue in cooperation with the relevant agencies in order to determine the source of the odor.
Officials are also in contact with the country’s energy bodies and other relevant agencies to determine whether the odor may be linked to a technical issue, an environmental factor or another cause.
According to information from the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, no leak or other damage has been detected so far at the Revithoussa facilities or elsewhere in the network. Correspondingly, Enaon EDA Attica reports that no relevant problem has been identified.
Authorities have contacted the agencies, but the source of the odor remains unidentified.
As reports of a strong odor continued to emerge, the ministry announced that the data so far do not indicate increased pollutants and there is not any other indication other than the unpleasant odor.
“Based on current data, fixed environmental monitors show no spike in air pollutants, nor is there any other indication beyond the unpleasant odor. Investigations and checks are ongoing.”
The ESKEDIK has received several calls since 11:40 regarding the smell in areas of Attica. As emphasized by the ministry, vehicles of the Fire Brigade were immediately deployed to carry out checks at the points from which the reports originated.
The incident has been reported to the General Secretariat for the Environment of the Ministry of Environment and Energy together with the Department of Environmental Inspectors, as well as to the competent Directorate of Environment of the Region of Attica.
