Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a package order for five vessels spanning three vessel types from a single shipping company.
Samsung Heavy Industries disclosed on May 27 that it has signed a contract with a Bermuda-based shipping company for a total of five vessels — one LNG carrier, two very large gas carriers (VLGCs), and two crude oil tankers — valued at 1 trillion 1.8 billion won (approximately $726 million).
The company’s cumulative order intake for the year stands at 27 vessels and $5.4 billion in total, broken down by vessel type as follows: 13 LNG carriers (including one LNG-FSRU), two ethane carriers, four gas carriers, two container carriers, and six crude oil tankers.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official said, “It is unusual for a shipowner to simultaneously place orders for multiple different vessel types with a single shipyard,” adding, “We will maximize profitability in high-value vessel types and production stability and efficiency in standardized vessel types.”
