Maersk Tankers sets up in-house technical management ahead of VLAC deliveries | Shipping news

Maersk, Euronav, Cargill, among companies to adopt vessel optimisation strategies

Denmark’s Maersk Tankers, part of A.P. Moller Group owned by A.P. Moller Holding, establishes its own technical management operation ahead of the delivery to its fleet of 10 very large ammonia carriers (VLACs).

The Copenhagen-based company’s tanker fleet will be included to ensure scale.

This step follows Maersk Tankers’ growing engagement in the gas carrier segment and its investment in VLACs with ammonia dual-fuel options.

“We are building 10 Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) and providing in-house technical management is critical to deliver the service our customers require for new technologies such as dual-fuel ammonia. To achieve scale, we include tankers as well,” says Tina Revsbech, CEO at Maersk Tankers.

Maersk Tankers, with its partner Synergy Group, is planning to deliver a “smooth and professional transition,” anticipated to conclude during 2026.

To remind, Synergy Marine Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Synergy Group, completed its takeover of Maersk Tankers’ technical management business on November 10, 2021.

“We are grateful to Synergy Group for the strong partnership and welcome the possibility of working together again where it aligns with our mutual priorities. As we engage further in the gas carrier segment, we require a setup that brings technical expertise closer to our commercial business – and at scale,” Revsbech adds.

Tommy Thomassen, chief operating officer at Maersk Offshore Wind and former chief technical officer at Maersk Tankers, will oversee the transition and guide the planning of a future-fit technical setup at Maersk Tankers, while continuing his responsibilities at Maersk Offshore Wind.
