Finnish shipping company Viking Line increased its use of bio-LNG tenfold in 2025.

The firm’s ferries consumed about 6,000 mt of bio-LNG during the year, the company said in a press release on Monday.

Ship & Bunker has previously reported that Viking Line has been collaborating with Gasum for the supply of bio-LNG, with volumes rising from 10 mt in 2023 to 600 mt in 2024.

Viking Line stated that the higher uptake of the fuel reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its vessels by more than 60,000 tonnes in 2025.

The company has been using bio-LNG to power its ferries, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, operating on the Turku–Stockholm route.

Bio-LNG is a cleaner alternative to fossil LNG, which is produced from organic materials such as biomass, waste, and agricultural residue. The fuel can be used as a drop-in fuel in existing LNG-fuelled ships and requires similar LNG bunkering infrastructure.
