Capital Clean Energy Carriers nears full exit from containership sector

Capital Clean Energy Carriers is edging closer to a full departure from the container shipping sector after agreeing to sell one of its two remaining boxships.

The Nasdaq-listed outfit, backed by Greek shipowner Evangelos Marinakis, has sealed a deal to divest the 2023-built 13,312 teu Buenaventura Express. The ship is expected to be handed over to its new owners in the first quarter of 2026.

CCEC said the sale is expected to generate a book gain of about $4.4m, with proceeds earmarked for paying down roughly $84.4m in outstanding debt and for general corporate purposes.

The transaction is part of the company’s ongoing shift away from boxships and deeper into gas shipping, including LNG and new energy-transition commodities. Since February 2024, CCEC has sold or agreed to sell 14 containerships, bringing in an estimated $814.3m in gross proceeds.

Once the Buenaventura Express is delivered, the company will be left with just one neo-panamax boxship, which is fixed on long-term employment through 2033, with options running to 2039.

CCEC today fields a fleet of 14 vessels, including 12 modern LNG carriers and two legacy container ships, one of which is now committed for sale. Its orderbook totals 16 newbuildings, covering LNG carriers, dual-fuel medium gas carriers and handy-size LCO₂/multi-gas ships scheduled for delivery between early 2026 and late 2027.
