Greece’s Chartworld Shipping is expanding its containership newbuilding programme with an order for up to eight units in China.

Shipbroking sources report that the Kollakis family–led owner has struck a deal with Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding for four firm and four optional 3,100 teu vessels, with deliveries of the firm units scheduled for 2028.

The latest order builds on Chartworld’s growing presence in the segment after the company contracted two firm plus two optional ships of similar specs at New Dayang Shipbuilding in July, also set for delivery in 2028.

At an estimated $42m per ship, the combined series could see Chartworld control up to 12 modern 3,100 teu vessels once all options are declared.

The move also marks a continuation of Chartworld’s return to containership newbuildings after a quiet period since 2021, when it ordered four 13,288 TEU vessels, two of which were chartered to Hapag-Lloyd, with the remaining pair acquired by the German liner.

Chartworld currently lists 13 owned containerships, including the 2010-built 3,718 TEU CMA CGM Africa Two, alongside a diversified fleet covering tankers and bulk carriers.
