Fire breaks out onboard Maersk boxship off Liberia with crew fighting flames | Container news

One of Danish container liner Maersk’s ships experienced a serious fire on board, as reported last week by claims specialist WK Webster.

A fire erupted on the Maersk container ship, Marie Maersk (IMO: 9619933), whilst in a position off the southwestern coast of Liberia on August 13.

According to reports from claims specialist WK Webster, the containership experienced a serious fire on board.

“It is reported that the smoke was first observed from containers on deck, and the vessel remains ablaze,” WK Webster said on August 13.

Two tugs reached the ship later that day to provide firefighting assistance. It is reported that the crew was safe amid ongoing efforts to control the fire.

The Marie Maersk has been diverted towards Liberia for shore-based firefighting efforts, WK Webster said, adding that the crew were safe while attempting to keep the situation under control. “All crew members are reported safe and remain on board assisting with firefighting and emergency operations.”

Marine Traffic data showed the 2013-built, Danish-flagged, 213971-dwt ship as having “restricted manoeuvrability” late on Thursday.

The Marie Maersk was travelling from Rotterdam Maasvlakte to Tanjung Pelepas at the time of the incident.
