Maersk charts December comeback to Suez Canal

Danish liner Maersk is preparing to return its containerships to the Suez Canal in early December under a new strategic partnership with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), marking the first phase of a full reinstatement of its Red Sea routings.

The move follows talks between the two sides and an announcement by Houthi forces suspending maritime attacks in the Red Sea, which has now resulted in a formal agreement signed in Ismailia by SCA chairman Admiral Ossama Rabiee and Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc. The deal outlines a broader framework for future cooperation, including maritime and logistics projects linked to East Port Said, the duo stated in a joint release.

Maersk shifted most of its services away from the Red Sea amid security concerns around Bab el-Mandeb. SCA said the gradual return signals growing confidence in regional stability.

Rabie said the comeback of Maersk ships was “a step in the right direction” for restoring normal trade flows on the key east–west route. He noted the canal has already seen improving traffic numbers through October and November as conditions in the Red Sea steadied.

Maersk reiterated that the Suez Canal remains its most efficient route between Asia and Europe. Clerc said the company expects other carriers to follow suit, adding that the canal will “remain a pivotal pillar” of the group’s global network.

French liner CMA CGM is also preparing a full return next month after its own discussions with the SCA, which is now working with all major lines on adjusting sailing schedules for a wider reopening of the Red Sea gateway. The passage of the 17,859 teu CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, earlier this month, marked the largest vessel to transit in two years, with other CMA CGM ships also rerouting back through the canal.

The SCA has been offering discounts and flexible pricing for large boxships and continues to strengthen its fleet and services to support the expected rebound in traffic.
