Search and rescue operations are underway off Guangzhou, China, after a Chinese bulker sank following a collision with a Wan Hai Lines’ Singapore-registered containership on Saturday night.

The 13,100-teu Wan Hai A17 collided with the Chinese-flagged bulker Hai Li 5 at around 20.00 hrs Singapore time, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Sunday.

The Hai Li 5 sank following the incident, with two of its 15 crew members still missing, according to Chinese maritime authorities. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing.

The 2024-built Wan Hai A17 remains stable, and no injuries among its 23 crew or pollution have been reported, MPA said. The vessel is currently detained in port to assist with investigations by the Chinese authorities.

MPA said it is in contact with the Taiwanese containerline and Chinese officials to provide assistance and will also conduct its own inquiry into the incident.
