V Group makes surprise boxship debut

Greek conglomerate V Group is making its first move into containership ownership, signing contracts for a pair of Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard (GWS) 1,930 teu bangkokmax vessels, according to Alphaliner.

Not to be confused with the global shipmanager, the Piraeus-based group, led by Vyron Vasileiadis is best known for its operations in port reception facilities, emergency response, decontamination services, waste-to-fuel production and technology. It is turning to liner tonnage through a newly established unit, OceanV.

The order covers two 1,930 teu ships for delivery in late 2028 and early 2029, with options for two additional sisters attached. Conventionally powered, ships of this class typically price at around $30m apiece.

Splash has been reporting about a growing list of Greek tanker and bulker owners migrating into the containership space.
