As China cut its coal imports by 10% in 2025, shipments from top supplier Indonesia saw the largest decline, according to data on Tuesday from China’s General Administration of Customs.
* Indonesian shipments were down 11% from 2024 at 211.45 million metric tons, dragged down earlier in the year by Indonesia’s efforts to push through a government pricing index that fell flat with Chinese buyers. Supply constraints in exporting countries weighed on shipments towards the end of the year.
* Mongolian coal shipments rose 7% to 88.96 million tons, the only top supplier to increase its shipments during the year. China’s cross-border neighbour benefited from global trade tensions as suppliers looked to diversify, and from China’s drive to reduce overcapacity that made domestic coal more expensive.
