China vows to safeguard lawful rights, interests in Panama port issues

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian reaffirmed on Wednesday that China will firmly uphold its legitimate rights and interests on issues related to relevant ports in Panama.

He made the remarks at a regular news briefing while slamming allegations made by the United States and a number of Latin American countries that accused China of “politicizing maritime trade”.

Lin said their allegations are “baseless and a complete distortion of facts”.

The spokesman asserted that it is the US that is politicizing port issues and smearing others, while the inspections on ships conducted by Chinese authorities are in accordance with laws and regulations.

He urged the countries involved to stay clearheaded and “not to be deceived or used by forces with ulterior motives”.
