CMA CGM launches Phase 2 of expansion works of Gemalink container terminal, a strategic trade gateway for Vietnam

The CMA CGM Group announces the launch of the expansion works of Gemalink’s container terminal, located in Cai Mep port in southern Vietnam, in which the Group holds a 25% stake, alongside its long-standing partner, Gemadept. This project marks a new milestone in the development of CMA CGM’s port capacity in Southeast Asia and confirms its long-term commitment to the region. Through this investment, CMA CGM reaffirms its ambition to contribute to Vietnam’s economic development and to support more fluid, resilient and sustainable supply chains.

An investment to double terminal capacity

Once completed, the terminal’s capacity will increase from 1.7 million to approximately 3 million TEUs, with full completion expected in 2027.

This expansion includes:

  • Extension of the existing quay length by a total of 450 meters in two parts
  • Expansion of the container yard from 32 to 44 hectares
  • Addition of 5 Ship-to-Shore cranes (STS), increasing from 8 to 13 units and yard equipment

This development will enable the terminal to accompany the dynamic and continued growth of import-export flows in a region at the heart of Asian supply chains.

A strategically positioned terminal already operating at full capacity

Since entering service in 2021, Gemalink has established itself as one of the most efficient terminals in the Vung Tau region and in Vietnam. Thanks to its strategic location along major maritime routes and the expertise of its teams, the terminal is currently operating at full capacity, handling 1.7 million TEUs on a yearly basis. This accelerated ramp-up confirms the asset’s strategic relevance within the Group’s logistics network and its ability to accommodate growing volumes. Gemalink’s performance is also driven by customer trust and the regular deployment of services operated by CMA CGM.

Christine CABAU WOEHREL, Executive Vice President of the CMA CGM Group, in charge of Operations and Assets, said, “Today’s groundbreaking ceremony for Gemalink Phase 2 underscores the CMA CGM Group’s long-term commitment to Vietnam. It also clearly demonstrates the strong partnership we have with Gemadept – one that is built on trust and shared ambition. This expansion will increase Gemalink’s capacity up to 3 million TEUs by the fourth quarter of 2027, consolidating Vietnam’s role in global supply chains and its vision to become a leading maritime logistics hub in Southeast Asia by 2050.”

A project supporting CMA CGM’s development strategy in Vietnam

This expansion is fully aligned with the long-term strategy of strengthening CMA CGM’s footprint in Vietnam.

The CMA CGM Group has been present in Vietnam since 1989 and currently operates 5 offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, Danang and Quy Nhon, with more than 550 employees. The Group runs 29 weekly services across 7 ports in the country, connecting major global destinations through a state-of-the-art intermodal network powered by CEVA Logistics.
