Following the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners’ authorization of a $283 million grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) under the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) Program for the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility Project, Port of Long Beach Chief Executive Officer Dr. Noel Hacegaba issued the following statement:
“I want to thank Secretary Sean Duffy at the U.S. Department of Transportation and Administrator Stephen Carmel at MARAD who are helping to advance the transformative Pier B project, which will drive a safer, more efficient flow of cargo to expand American supply chain jobs and economic impact. We’re building the Port of the Future here at the Port of Long Beach, and we couldn’t do this without the investment of our federal partners through the Mega grant agreement. Speed to market is the key to our success and rail connectivity is the key to our future.”
The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility will enhance on-dock rail capacity at the Port of Long Beach’s shipping terminals, speeding deliveries across the entire national supply chain, easing congestion and lessening environmental impacts. The project – which began construction in 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2032 – will more than triple the volume of on-dock rail cargo the Port can handle annually, from 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 4.7 million TEUs.
