Two arrested over attempted sabotage of German navy ships | Port news

Two suspects have been arrested over the attempted sabotage of German defence equipment in 2025. The arrest of the Romanian and Greek suspects took place in Germany and Greece on Tuesday, February 3.

The two suspects, who were port employees at the time, have been arrested over the attempted sabotage of navy ships last year.

The pair are suspected of deactivating electronic safety switches, removing fuel tank caps, puncturing the fresh water supply lines, and dumping more than 20 kilogrammes of abrasive gravel into the engine block of German navy ships.

Prosecutors stressed that the alleged actions could have caused serious damage or delays, affecting the operational readiness of the German navy. Authorities are also examining whether the suspects acted on behalf of third parties, while the analysis of evidence remains ongoing.

“If gone undetected, the acts would have caused major damage to the ships and delayed their departure, endangering the operations of the German Navy,” the EU’s Eurojust agency said in a statement.

The suspects were arrested in Germany and in Greece following a coordinated effort between German, Greek and Romanian authorities.

Officers also searched and seized evidence from the suspects’ residences in Germany, Greece and Romania, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation – Eurostat said.

The arrest of a suspect in Greece and another in Germany was the result of a coordinated effort between Eurojust and the German, Greek and Romanian authorities.

“Investigations into attempted sabotage are ongoing,” the agency noted.

The arrests come as NATO members remain on high alert for espionage and infrastructure attacks.

Officials said they are still reviewing evidence and the investigation will also address the question of whether the suspects acted on behalf of third parties.
