South Korea awards 689MW in offshore wind tender

South Korea has awarded 689MW of offshore wind projects in the latest tender for fixed-bottom offshore wind.

The tender was split into two parts. One was public-led, with about 500MW, and a general category for private-sector projects with 750MW on offer.

All four winners in the round are in the public-led part. The Korea Energy Agency (KEA) said that no projects were chosen from the general group.

The winners were KEPCO’s Korea Offshore Wind Power-developed Southwest Offshore Wind Power Demonstration Complex with a capacity of 400MW, and the 100MW Handong-Pyeongdae offshore wind project developed by Jeju Energy and Korea East-West Power.

The third winning project is the 99MW Dadaepo offshore wind project developed by Korea Southern Power and Corio, with the final being the 80MW Aphae project developed by CGO, Korea Electric Power, and Hyundai.

The Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners-developed Haesong 3 offshore wind project and the Myungun Industrial Development-developed Hanbit project were not selected in the tender.

All winning projects except the Southwest offshore wind project, which has said they will deploy 10MW turbines produced domestically, will use the Doosan Enerbility 10MW turbines. This will be the first use of the Korean company’s offshore wind turbines at a commercial scale.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, another tender is planned for the second half of 2025.
