Iran: 7 port projects launched in Hormozgan to boost container capacity

According to the Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Department, the projects were launched via videoconference by President Masoud Pezeshkian to mark the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Total rial-denominated investment in the schemes amounted to about 87.62 billion rials, alongside more than 45 million euros allocated to equipment.

Most of the projects are concentrated at Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest commercial port. Developments include the construction of a container services terminal and transit and export cargo terminals, raising storage capacity by 46,400 TEU and 120,000 TEU respectively.

The expansion is expected to improve logistics efficiency and reduce vessel waiting times.

Equipment upgrades formed a major part of the investment, with 29.5 million euros financed by the private sector for equipment optimization and the procurement of five new transtainers worth 16 million euros funded by the Ports and Maritime Organization.

The upgrades are expected to accelerate loading and unloading operations.

Maritime services were also expanded with the commissioning of a pilot boat valued at 6.74 billion rials (about $13,480) to facilitate vessel movements.

Other works included major repairs to the perimeter wall of Shahid Rajaee Port and rehabilitation of the coastal protection wall in Gorzin, Qeshm, aimed at enhancing safety standards and preventing coastal erosion.

Officials said the projects support efforts to strengthen port infrastructure and transit development, and are expected to create direct employment for 330 people in the province.
