HD Hyundai Chairman Boosts Korea-Philippines Cooperation on State Visit

HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun joined the economic delegation accompanying President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit to the Philippines. HD Hyundai, which has actively targeted the Philippine market in shipbuilding and defense sectors, views the chairman’s visit as an opportunity to elevate cooperation between the two nations.

According to HD Hyundai on the 5th, Chairman Chung attended the ‘Korea-Philippines Business Forum’ co-hosted by the Federation of Korean Industries and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the 4th to discuss expanding economic collaboration. He later paid respects at the Korean War memorial monument for veterans at the Manila National Heroes’ Cemetery. The Philippines was the first Asian country to dispatch a combat unit during the Korean War, sending 7,420 personnel.
Chairman Chung stated, “HD Hyundai has gone beyond a simple business partnership with the Philippines to serve as a key bridge for enhancing friendship between South Korea and the Philippines. We will continue to build deep trust with the Philippines with pride in representing South Korea.”

On the 5th, Chairman Chung inspected HD Hyundai Philippines Shipyard in Subic Bay. The shipyard, launched in May 2024 by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, invested $550 million to refurbish facilities and began full operations in September last year with the steel-cutting ceremony for a 115,000-ton class petrochemical product carrier. After touring the dormitory construction site and yard, Chairman Chung had lunch with local employees, promising, “We will pay special attention to housing, healthcare, and security.”

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured orders for 12 Philippine Navy vessels since 2016 and established a military support center in 2022 to handle MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) for frigates and patrol ships. Recently, it further strengthened trust by delivering the 2,400-ton class offshore patrol vessel ‘Raja Sulaiman’ five months ahead of schedule.
