Japanese trading giant Itochu Corporation is set to operate the world’s first ammonia bunkering vessel by September 2027.

Itochu, via its Singapore bunkering subsidiary, has signed a shipbuilding contract for the construction of a 5,000 cu m ammonia bunkering vessel with Sasaki Shipbuilding and an agreement regarding the construction of an ammonia tank plant that will be loaded onto the vessel with Izumi Steel Works. The ship will fly the flag of Singapore, the world’s top bunkering hub, where it will be based.

By entering the bunkering segment early, Itochu aims to take a leadership role in the full value chain—from ammonia production and logistics to shipboard delivery.

The company’s initiative aligns with its broader strategy to establish green ammonia production hubs and collaborate on vessel development. Itochu has already been active in partnerships with Japanese shipbuilders, fuel suppliers, and classification societies to advance ammonia-fuelled ship designs and regulatory frameworks.

Several other maritime nations and industry players—including Singapore, Norway, and South Korea—have announced feasibility studies or early-stage plans for ammonia bunkering, with many ammonia-ready vessels on the global orderbook.
