Mitsui & Co to offer Japan’s first ship tokenisation vehicle

Trading house Mitsui & Co will start offering Japan’s first digital securities for fractional aircraft and ship ownership, according to local financial newswire Nikkei.

Mitsui, through subsidiary Mitsui & Co Digital Asset Management, has operated an online asset management service named Alterna since 2023. The company plans to add aircraft and ship securities to its lineup, with investors able to get onboard for as little as Y100,000 ($630).

Mitsui will acquire aircraft and ships for investment, and then pay investors returns on charter deals secured for these acquisitions.

Companies already offering tokenisation and fractional investment in maritime or shipping-related assets include Antier, Bloklab, and Shipfinex.
