North Sea wells originally used for oil production are currently being prepared for CO2 storage as part of the Greensand Future project in Denmark, which will store carbon in the Nini West field located approximately 240 kilometers northwest of Esbjerg.

To remind, in December 2022, Project Greensand was granted an exploration permit for the injection and storage of up to 15,000 tons of CO2 in Nini West over a four-month period. This was followed by a world first on March 8, 2023, with the first-ever injection of CO2 in the North Sea.

INEOS, the day-to-day operator, and partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden (the Danish North Sea Fund) reached the final investment decision (FID) in December 2024 to invest in the Greensand Future Project, the first commercial phase of the Greensand project.

Then, in December 2025, the Danish Energy Agency issued its first-ever approval for a full-scale CO2 storage facility, clearing the Greensand Future project to store CO2.

In line with this, work is currently underway offshore to reconfigure wells that were originally used for oil production so they can safely handle the injection of CO2 into the reservoir.

This includes installing new equipment and barriers by running a wire deep into the wells, approximately 1,800 meters down into the well, to ensure they are ready for their new purpose.

The work is carried out from the platform, with personnel accessing the installation through a combination of offshore logistics solutions, including helicopter transport and, when conditions allow, a walk-to-work (W2W) vessel via gangway.

Well preparation is expected to take several weeks.
