TotalEnergies signs preliminary deal to offtake Alaskan LNG for 20 years

French energy giant TotalEnergies has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with lead developer Glenfarne for the offtake of 2 million tons per year (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over 20 years from the Alaska LNG project, subject to the project’s final investment decision (FID).

The Alaska LNG project, being developed through 8 Star Alaska, 75% owned by Glenfarne and 25% owned by the State of Alaska through the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation, is being developed in two financially independent phases to accelerate project execution.

Phase One consists of a 765-mile, 42-inch pipeline to transport natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to meet Alaska’s domestic energy needs and Phase Two will add the LNG liquefaction terminal and related infrastructure to export 20 mtpa of LNG.

Located on the U.S. Pacific coast, the project is sid to be the only federally authorized LNG export terminal in this region.

Glenfarne is targeting mechanical completion of the pipeline in 2028 and delivery of first gas in 2029. The company recently announced conditional awards for pipeline construction and line pipe supply, following a multi-round bid process that began with twenty participants. As a result, Worley has been selected to provide engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services.

TotalEnergies exported 19 million tons of U.S. LNG in 2025. Over the years, the company has invested in a number of LNG projects in North America, such as Cameron LNG and Rio Grande LNG in the U.S., Energia Costa Azul in Mexico, and Ksi Lisims LNG in Canada, in addition to offtaking LNG from major terminals in the U.S., such as Sabine Pass LNG, Freeport LNG, and Corpus Christi LNG.
