Trump wipes out subsidies for wind and solar power

US president Donald Trump has signed an executive order to eliminate subsidies for green energy sources, more precisely wind and solar power, as he makes another step on his warpath against renewable energy.

The order directs the secretary of the treasury to terminate the clean electricity production and investment tax credits for wind and solar facilities and implement the Foreign Entity of Concern restrictions as identified in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed on July 4.

It also directs the secretary of the interior, Doug Burgum, to revise regulations and policies and “eliminate preferential treatment for wind and solar facilities compared to reliable, dispatchable energy sources”.

A statement from the White House claimed that president Trump was committed to “unleashing American energy and preventing taxpayers from funding expensive and unreliable energy policies” made by former president Joe Biden.

The White House believes that reliance on subsidies for renewable energy “threatens national security by making the United States dependent on supply chains controlled by foreign adversaries”.

The statement noted that Trump’s focus will be on nuclear energy, fossil fuels, and emerging technologies.
