Norwegian oil and gas player Aker BP has progressed the development of its projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).
Aker BP is developing multiple projects in the North Sea, including the Valhall PWP-Fenris development, which entered the construction stage in September 2023, with total investments estimated at $6.6 billion. The production is anticipated to start in Q3 2027.
The Valhall project’s MEG module, weighing approximately 1,000 tonnes, has been completed at Nymo’s yard in Grimstad. The Norwegian operator claims that this delivery represents a key milestone for the project.
The MEG module is a critical part of the processing facilities, enabling regeneration and reuse of monoethylene glycol, a chemical that prevents hydrate formation and ensures safe and stable gas transportation. At Aker Solutions’ yard at Stord, the module will be integrated with the rest of the topside.
The Fenris topside recently sailed from the Aker Solutions yard in Verdal, delivered by the Fixed Facilities Alliance between Aker BP, Aker Solutions, and ABB. Fenris is an unmanned production platform that will be tied back to the new production and wellhead platform at the Valhall central complex.
When production starts in 2027, Fenris is anticipated to significantly increase gas export from Valhall and contribute to Norway’s long-term capacity for stable energy deliveries to Europe.
Aker BP and its partners, Equinor and PGNiG Upstream Norway, made a final investment decision (FID) to develop the Yggdrasil area in December 2022 and submitted plans for development and operation (PDOs) to the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
The operator has confirmed the sail-away of the Hugin B jacket from Aker Solutions in Verdal. The 4,500-tonne jacket is the final of three jackets to be installed in the Yggdrasil area. Measuring 145 meters in length and 45 x 45 meters at the feet, the jacket is described as a complex structure.
The Yggdrasil project, with gross resources of more than 700 million barrels of oil equivalent, is expected to be remotely operated from an integrated operations center and control room onshore in Stavanger.
