The methanol-dual fuel RORO ship CM Hong Kong completed bunkering of 300 tonnes of green methanol at China’s Tianjin Port, marking the nation’s first green methanol refuelling for a RORO ship.
The operation was conducted by Sinapec Fuel Oil using green methanol sourced from northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The methanol is produced from waste tyres and biomass and can cut carbon dioxide emissions by 460 tonnes per refuelling compared to conventional fuels.
As the shipping industry accelerates its decarbonisation efforts, clean and renewable methanol is gaining a lot of traction.
Tianjin, a major port city close to green methanol production bases in northern China, is advancing its green fuel industry.
The port is equipped with dedicated infrastructure, including liquid chemical berths, methanol storage tanks and railway lines.
This bunkering operation shows Tianjin Port’s capacity for large-scale green methanol supply, marking a significant milestone for China’s ports in supporting global low-carbon transition, said Jiang Bingyu, an official from the Tianjin Investment Promotion Bureau.
The wider adoption of green methanol will drive the energy transformation of the shipping sector and contribute to the international emission reduction goals, per industry analysts.
