The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed the death of a Filipino seafarer on board MV Arvia, a passenger cruise ship operated by P&O Cruises. The agency said an investigation is now underway to find out the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In an official statement issued on 30 October, the DMW expressed its deepest condolences to the seafarer’s family and assured that both the Department and the licensed manning agency responsible for the crew member’s deployment are coordinating closely with the shipowner and relevant authorities to ensure a transparent inquiry.

The manning agency reportedly informed the DMW that the situation remains under investigation.

The Department stated that the relatives of the deceased have been notified and are receiving regular updates on the progress of the investigation. The department also assured that full support and assistance, including the repatriation of the seafarer’s remains, will be extended to the family.

Per reports, the Filipino crew member passed away on Sunday while the vessel was sailing from Southampton to Tenerife.

The Arvia had departed from Southampton on Friday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to the Caribbean and is expected to arrive in Barbados on November 7.

The DMW emphasised that it remains committed to protecting the welfare, safety, and dignity of every Filipino worker abroad, particularly during moments of loss and hardship.

The department conveyed that the entire maritime community mourns the seafarer’s passing, honouring the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifices of Filipino seafarers who serve across the world’s oceans.

The agency also extended its sympathies to the bereaved family, saying it stands with them in mourning and prays for the seafarer’s eternal rest.
